Lucky for Hikaru, Jim was genius enough that spontaneous and unexpected bouts of geeking out were commonplace, as well, so he ate this information up eagerly. He turned back to the plant, and then shifted his attention back to Sulu, undeniably impressed.

Granted, Jim felt a certain degree of responsibility for not knowing -- he let Sulu have free reign of the greenhouse and didn't check in as often as a good captain would have.
