If Sulu were in the back, he'd probably end up clinging to him if Jack got particularly adventurous, whereas...he'd probably end up with a death grip on the stead or the door or something, if he were to sit alone. He sure as hell wasn't going to give Sulu that information aloud, though, so. They were all adults here, and one little car ride alone in the back wasn't going to kill him. Hopefully.
