Writer's Block: Exit strategy

Probably not the best one of these to wind down to, but I guess they can't all be about embarrassing childhood moments.

I've never actually told anyone in my family that I've not wanted them around any more; for the most part, I love my family. My mother and father are very dear to me, and my grandparents both had a strong influence in my childhood. But I was sort of raised under the impression that I was going to be doing work with my father when I graduated, so when I told them that I was joining Starfleet, things got a little strained. I'm still welcomed home with open arms and all, but it definitely doesn't make family gatherings easier.

That's actually why Christmas was such a pain; I had to deal with a lot of political talk and some... well, it's not even important. But the point of this is that I'm kind of on the other side of this prompt. Not quite to the point of no return, but we'll see what happens when the five years are up.

Though, when I was thirteen, I think I kicked a cousin of mine out of the house, if that counts. I don't even remember why.

On the other side of this prompt? Meaning that you might end up being the one that your family would want out of their life, then?

It's a possibility that I've had to consider, yeah. Not that I like considering it, but I'd rather be prepared for the worst, you know?

I have to say, I'm no stranger to that feeling. And I'm only a half an hour drive away from my family.

The black sheep who saves the world? I think our club is starting to get a little too specific. At this rate, nobody else is going to be able to join.

I think you're automatically signed up when you decide that dangerous situations are less perilous than family gatherings. Then again, that might just be me. I'd take a fleet of Klingon warbirds over another awkward dinner any day.

...I shouldn't be complaining. It's only my sister and her family that I've got. They tend to be bitter about me not being there more often even when I am there, though, so. It gets tiring.

They shouldn't complain. At least they can call you or write to you. ...Then again, like I said, it's kind of a good thing I'm lightyears away.

Nope. I only have to deal with crushing the aspirations that they had for me. I take it that's your family?

You'd think that being from India would encourage them to think that having babies isn't really a good idea, but no. You have no idea what it was like when I told my father that I wasn't going to become a gynecologist. Then, when they found out that I blew the arranged marriage or heaven forbid if I marry a white girl

It's not that bad really, my father and mother had an arranged marriage and they've been married for almost forty years.

I'm not doubting it! I'm just saying. Arranged marriages are kind of barbaric.

There's always a point to return to. Although sometimes I think it's different than the place you started.

I'm sure there's better places to be. But it's hard to know where they are if you don't accidentally find some bad places, too. It's what exploring's all about.

In all honesty, you probably don't have a choice. It's hard to get rid of the community once it takes a liking to you.
