FLYING TROUGH A BLACK HOLE:
A SULU/IANTO SOUNDTRACK FOR DRAMADRAMADUCK
DOWNLOAD HERE (12 TRACKS, 56.2MB)
[1] Something, Somewhere, Sometime, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore
~
and if I’ve wounded you, I’m sorry
I had good intentions
if I’ve wounded you, I’m sorry
it happens all the time
you remind me of a reason
had by someone so many years ago
some words through wires
built highways from coast to coast
but those words they’ll show
that roads have worn with time
on the way to something somewhere sometime
~
Since Sulu puts his foot in his mouth often enough, I thought I should dedicate a song on this FST to that fact. The song sounds hopeful enough, and it pretty accurately addresses Sulu's sometimes very apparent lack of tact or timing.
~sometimes I feel like an arrow, fired at something somewhere long ago...~
[2] Paperweight, Joshua Radin & Schuyler Fisj
~
happy to lay here
hust happy to be here
I’m happy to know you
play me a song
your newest one
please leave your taste on my tongue
paperweight on my back
cover me like a blanket
~
The fact of the matter is, sappy as it may be, Sulu and Ianto have the kind of relationship that could very likely lead to days where they just cannot find the effort to get out of bed in the morning. They seem to always be sort of lost in each other.
~and no need to worry, that’s wasting time; and no need to wonder what’s been on my mind: it's you...~
[3] I Melt With You, Nouvelle Vague
~
moving forward using all my breath
making love to you was never second best
I saw the world thrashing all around your face
never really knowing it was always mesh and lace
I'll stop the world and melt with you
you've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
there's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
~
"Melt With You" is a staple of most pairing FSTs, I've found, but Nouvelle's version fits the tone of this FST/relationship best. It's a little idyllic, maybe, but hey. Idyllic is good. They should have it while they can.
~the future's open wide...~
[4] Raindrops, Regina Spektor
~
you don’t know but that’s okay
you might find me anyway
don’t you know that I
belong arm in arm with you, baby
in a town that’s cold and gray
we will have a sunny day
don’t you know that I
belong arm in arm with you, baby…
~
What indie-stuffed FST is complete without a little Regina? This song fits the Jacket log, where Ianto and Sulu walked arm in arm through a rainy Cardiff, after realizing that there was something more to the other than they'd previously thought.
~suddenly though, everything’s slow, and I miss you so...~
[5] Such Great Heights, Iron & Wine
~
I am thinking it's a sign
that the freckles in our eyes
are mirror images and when we kiss
they're perfectly aligned
and I have to speculate
that God himself did make us
into corresponding shapes
like puzzle pieces from the clay
~
Also needed this song on here, because as sappy and sacchirine (and dare I say cliche?) this song might be, I can really imagine Sulu going so far as to leaving these sorts of sentiments on Ianto's answering machine.
~they will see us waving from such great heights; come down now, they'll say - but everything looks perfect from far away; come down now, but we'll stay...~
[6] P.S. You Rock My World, The Eels
~
I was at a funeral the day I realized
I wanted to spend my life with you
sitting down on the steps at the old post office
the flag was flying at half mast
and I was thinking 'bout how
everyone is dying
and maybe it is time to live
I don't know where we're going
I don't know what we'll do
~
I'm a terrible person to put this song on this FST, but after CoE, this is probably going to be Sulu's theme song. Thinking about this song from that perspective makes it really depressing, actually... :(
~and how a careful man tries to dodge the bullets, while a happy man takes a walk; and maybe it is time to live...~
[7] Movie Loves a Screen, April Smith & the Great Picture Show
~
maybe what I mean to say
is that I think about you in the most romantic of ways
and I'm hoping you'll be open to discussing us and nothing in between
maybe what I mean is that I love you more than any other I've seen
if you couldn't tell well I hope you're quite keen on it
like a rhyme loves a sonnet
like a movie loves a screen
that's what I wanna mean to you
~
This song is totally the epitome of Sulu's feelings for Ianto, I think. The beat, the lyrics and all that. It's a very "this is how it goes" sort of song, and that's how Sulu treats his relationship with Ianto, while Ianto worries about things incessantly. (You might see a little bit of Jack lurking around in this song, and that is not completely your imagination.)
~a smile means things turned out alright, despite an oversight or two - I just want to mean something to you...~
[8] Hardest of Hearts, Florence + the Machine
~
there is love in your body but you can't get it out
it gets stuck in your head, won't come out of your mouth
sticks to your tongue and it shows on your face that
the sweetest of words have the bitterest taste
darling, how I loved you from the start, but you'll never know what a fool I've been
darling, how I loved you from the start, but that's no excuse for the state I'm in
~
Apparently I'm incapable of not including Florence in a Sulu-related soundtrack, but this has consistantly been chosen as a Sulu/Ianto song for a WHILE now. Anyway, this is more an Ianto song, going by the lyrics; the more reserved nature, the hesitation and the fear that it might not end well all fits Ianto pretty well, I'd say. (Sulu, for the record, will do anything he can to alleviate these worries.)
~Ww all need something to hold in the night; we don't care if it hurts when we're holding too tight...~
[9] The Fear You Won't Fall, Joshua Radin
~
and I know it's easy to say,
but it's harder to feel this way,
I miss you more than I should,
than I thought I could,
can't get my mind off of you,
I know you're scared,
that I'll soon be over it,
that's part of it all,
part of the beauty,
of falling in love with you,
is the fear that you won't fall,
~
Part of me wants to say this is another Ianto song (to Sulu, rather than to himself, though), but another part of me can't really decide. It definitely covers both Sulu and Ianto's anxiety, though a lot of it sounds more like it's coming from Ianto (like that first verse I copied? That's practically from the Visit log!)
~and I hate the phone, but I wish you'd call, thought being alone, was better than, was better than...~
[10] Fly Me Away, Goldfrapp
~
drifting out of time
something on your mind
and I wanna be the one that you call
when you get down
no matter where you are in the world
I'll be around
fly me away on an aeroplane
high in the sky wanna see you again
wanna know this time
gonna tell you what I'm feeling
gonna know this time
gonna get it back that feeling
~
This is definitely a song for both Sulu and Ianto. It has a space-agey feel, plus it's got lyrics about flying away and if you pretend I'm not crazy, I'd say planes are almost like starships. Sulu wants to be the one Ianto talks to when he needs someone to talk to, and the idea of not wanting to live a normal life is mutual, it seems.
~this crazy life, this crazy world we're living in, is magical...~
[11] Do You Realize, The Flaming Lips
~
do you realize - that you have the most beautiful face
do you realize - we're floating in space -
do you realize - that happiness makes you cry
do you realize - that everyone you know someday will die
~
This song speaks for itself, really. If you really want to get out there, this one can be read from alternating viewpoints, and you can even see a little bit of Jack in there, I'd say.
~and instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know, you realize that life goes fast, it's hard to make the good things last...~
[12] A Mountain of Ice, Helios
~
instrumental
~
I put this one here because I listen to it a lot when writing tags, and I thought it closed up the soundtrack pretty well. It's a great instrumental track.
[BONUS] Alone in Kyoto, Air
~
instrumental
~
I slipped this one in because I really like the mood, and I'm sure there'll be a time, maybe even post-CoE, where this song will be fitting.
