[McCoy felt like he may have been in one of those highschool/rich soicety social dramas. He contemplated how to respond to the news of Sylar 'flaunting it' when Sulu looked and- well shit.] Nothing. [He said tactfully, reaching for the bottle. Where was his glass? Beside Sulu. Fuck.] Could you- [He gestured to it.]
[Sulu was pretty happy to be able to... do something in his current state (you know, drunk and womanly), so he was quick to grab and hold out the glass. Still, he pursed his lips because that was completely the opposite of a nothing move, he'd probably said something stupid and no, another drink wouldn't help his situation.]
--Either way, my point, originally, the one about me not handling this with... decorum or something, whatever, that one still stands. [He offers McCoy a smile,] I think that's, uh, where that was going, I mean. The roundabout thank you, I'm not really good with it but thank you for tolerating it until I'm in a better mind to... [He trailed off, furrowed his brow, waved his hand.] Deal with it.
[McCoy poured himself another drink, he could handle it thank you very much, he made it through academy with Jim Kirk and through the slow downturn of life before that. He paused as he lifted his cup, raising one eyebrow at Sulu in some attempt to decipher that comment through his already clouded mind.]
Your welcome. [He settled on before lifting his glass in mock toast and taking the drink.] I suppose it's part of my job description, health and well being of the crew. Besides the fact I probably owe you for stopping that god damned tree from choking me to death.
[Sulu blinked the vague blurriness out of his eyes and then picked up his glass, holding it out to McCoy.] I don't have the coordination, I can already tell, but just one more before I realize that I shouldn't have it. Right? [:)?]
[:|'] Yeah I figured as much kid. [McCoy stood up, almost losing his balance- ok, maybe he was a little worse off than he thought- and moved to put the bottle away.] That's why I'm cutting you off. Health and wellbeing, remember? [And he couldn't handle this more drunk than he already was.]
[Sulu sighed but nodded. He didn't try to get shitfaced, usually, so having someone to actually pull the bottle away when he was... apparently about to start binging (he really needed to stop worrying so much) was a good thing.] You're right. I'm not too good at restraining myself when I get this far. [He laughed,] Good thing the doctor's here, at least if I get alcohol poisoning you'll be here.
Hell you kids. [McCoy was trying to remember where he kept his liquor. It was hard.] Are going to be the death of me. Turning into a- women, that damned attitude. You're like Jim, too hard on yourself. Not that I can blame you, on the flagship at your age. What was Star Fleet thinking sending the lot of us up here...
[Sulu tried to raise one eyebrow but instead raised both, watching McCoy... look for a place to put the bottle.] My age? I'm not that young! [He huffed and slid off the desk. Okay, standing wasn't so easy, when did they hit a space storm and get so rocky? He leaned against the desk oh-so-inconspicuously and gripped the edge.] Hoo, boy. Should have taken the bottle away earlier. And I'm twenty-one years old, and besides, we're better than anyone else.
[...Okay, chatty and a little egotistic. Still, since he was stating what he perceived to be cold, hard facts, there was no need to apologize.] They were thinking, "Let's put the best, most.... awesome people on our flagship." And I can't blame them!
Twenty one. [McCoy repeated as proof, turning to raise his brow at her, not yet noticing the imbalance.] You and Jim also have some damn ego on you. Sure you're all a bunch of brilliant kids, but your still kids.
[He grinned and shook his head a little harder than probably necessary.] I only act like this when I drink, I don't like boasting most of the time. And maybe we're just kids but. [He pointed at McCoy,] Don't forget that I saved you from a tentacle monster. You know, until Jim came and... did the actual saving, whatever, I still helped. [Big Damn Hero time. He laughed again and moved to take a step, grabbing the desk when that turned out to be a bad idea.]
But I don't - think that, you know, that any of us are infal - mm, unable to make mistakes. We can, but we... take responsibility for them. And try to fix them. [A frown,] Even if it doesn't really work out, but still, that's what makes us so good.
[McCoy reached out to grab his arm when it looked like Sulu was going to stumble, frowning a little at how much sense the pilot was making. McCoy figured he must have been damned drunk himself.]
Experience means a lot you know. [Oh he was still holding Sulu's arm. He pulled away sharply, nearly stumbling himself.] It shouldn't work- all these kids shouldn't work as well as they do.
[He was completely oblivious to the grab, but when McCoy nearly stumbled in his backpedaling he grabbed his arm to steady him with his... relatively lesser weight. Hey, he was just as much a bro as McCoy.] Experience can only, you know, you can only gain experience by making mistakes. And then fixing them. And why not? We performed, uh... Worked with each other really good in a crisis situation. That's, like... the one way you know, you know? That you're a good team.
[A bro with breasts god damn it. McCoy managed to look thoroughly flustered, which on him didn't look too much different than drunk rambling. Without the rambling. He could do smooth ok.] That was a whole lot of luck kid, a whole lot of skill sure, but a whole lot of luck to back it up. Hell, if half the fleet hadn't been destroyed I would- they wouldn't have. Maybe it was old Spock.
[Sulu frowned.] There's nothing wrong with how we performed and I think it was... good, the luck part, because then we wouldn't have such a... [He laughed (okay so it's kind of like a giggle but shut up, it's just the pitch all right?) and grinned,] A crack team of specialists! Who work together great. Stop being so negative, you're stuck with us.
Don't I know it. [He muttered, walking over to his bed and sitting down because I fucking said so.] It really doesn't bother you at all- hell, it shouldn't. You're just like Jim. [He gives up with that, waving a hand.] Yeah, we're the crack team.
[He grinned.] You worry too much. I don't let it bother me because we work good together. [A little... well, coyly,] There's an ancient Japanese saying: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
[McCoy couldn't help but laugh at that, low and maybe a bit drunkenly. Fuck you all, it was funny.] You know some say there's always room for improvement, broken or not.
[Smugly,] You should laugh more, it'll make you less grumpy. [He was ~so pleased~ that he got McCoy to laugh and it showed. That was a damned achievement.] I think we're improving every day, though. I mean, you know, with us all working together.
[He frowned suddenly and shook his head.] Of course until I go and do something stupid, but that'll... work itself out. You know Jim better than me, how long does he stay... mad at people?
[McCoy rolled his eyes at his suggestion.] And ruin my reputation? [He said, bone dry, before considering Sulu's question.]
Give him time. Jim respects you Sulu, he just needs to remember why. Keep driving us around and he'll figure it out. [McCoy made a note to go tell Jim to stop being an idiot about this. The jealous friend part. Not that McCoy was much better when it came to Jim and Spock but that was different. It was.]
[Another grin.] I guess you should only do it around people who know you aren't grumpy, then, huh? [He shrugged, then, suddenly realizing he was listing to the side. You know, around the time he had to step to keep from stumbling.] I guess. I'm not planning on begging for his forgiveness anyway.
Who says I'm not? [His lips quirked, the eyeroll in his tone. When Sulu... tipped he scowled, gesturing him over.] Come on sit down before you fall over. And don't worry about Jim, I- he'll get over it before you know it.
I do. [Sulu, being smart enough to know that the ship wasn't actually rocking, decided to take McCoy's advice and stumbled over, dropping onto the bed and lying flat on his back. He paused at the stumble in McCoy's sentence and pointed at him vaguely, not really looking.] Don't go lecturing him, he'll just, I don't know, he'll be... mad. At you intervening. [Hmmm.] You know, he actually asked, uh, he said something about you and me being friends? And I don't know why or anything since we weren't... talking about you. We were talking about me.
[McCoy sighed, flopping back because he was tired and if he and Sulu were lying far too close well, that was just the way it was.] I don't know, he's... [He glared up at the ceiling, which needed to stop moving faintly.] He thought I was- I don't know. After all this time, after I risked my damned career bringing him here he still thinks I'll up and walk out. [He turned, glancing to Sulu.] He's still a damned kid in so many ways.
[Sulu mulled that over in his alcohol-saturated brain for a bit, making a thoughtful noise before sitting up to get a good look at McCoy. Squinting a bit blearily, he leaned over slightly and gave him the best reassuring look he could muster.] He just really... needs to relax. I barely even know you and I can tell that you're not... going to... [He chewed his lip, mumbling something in Japanese before deciding on,] walk out on him. You're his friend, and he needs to stop having trust issues about it because it's... stupid. [He nodded; that sounded good enough.] Not that I'm going to tell him that.
[Jim was planning on coming to ask McCoy something about the starbase and Nancy Crater, because I think that's about when this happened, and just used his captain's override to come straight into the room because he has no sense of privacy, but he stopped short when he came inside and saw ~Demora~ and his best friend sitting on the bed. His stomach lurched.]
Should I come back later? [His voice was monotone, trying to make it sound like he couldn't give a shit, mostly because he was still trying to process what was undeniably real life in front of him.]
